The Mexican island of Cozumel, whose Mayan name means "Island
of the Swallows," is situated about 12 miles off the Yucatan coast
in the Caribbean and draws vacationers underwater for several
reasons. There is often a 200 feet visibility, an abundance of
fish life, and the fact that this underwater world is remarkably
accessible.
You can actually stroll out the doors of Cozumel Condos at Puesta
del Sol II and go snorkeling over the rich coral formations --
in a matter of minutes! Remains of Mayan temples and ceremonial
centers still dot the island and are only a short car drive away
from Puesta del Sol II condos. Cozumel was the first place in
Mexico to be visited by Europeans, and at one point along the
beach a plaque marks the spot where Catholic mass was first celebrated
in the country.
Oceanographer Jacques Cousteau pronounced Cozumel, Mexico one
of the finest diving areas in the world. The waters were decreed
a national park in 1996, and visitors say it is a privilege to
dive and snorkel there.
The island, which lies across the horizon from the east coast
of the Yucatan Peninsula, is 32 miles long and nine miles wide.
It's settled only on the western inland side due to large waves
and undercurrents on the eastern shore. (The
Gulf of Mexico) The main village of Cozumel is San
Miguel.
A trip around the island can be rewarding, especially if this
is your first visit. It's a 35-mile excursion and can be done
in a taxi or a rented car. Stop for lunch at one of many good
restaurants (a Cozumel Condos favorite is Coconuts,
on a bluff overlooking wild waves) and take tours of San Gervasio
ruins, Punta Celarain, and Chankanaab National Park, all in one
exhiliarating and wonderful day.
The atmosphere is relaxed, the climate is tropical, and the main sports are scuba diving and snorkeling. Cutoffs and tank-tops seem to be as dressy as anyone ever gets, except in the nicer restaurants, where a somewhat higher level of casual is expected. Subtropical, averaging 80 degrees year round.
There are new hydrofoil
ferries that make many daily trips to Playa del Carmen
on the mainland, and return to Cozumel. From there, numerous tours
are available to points of interest on the mainland. Cancun is
a short distance from Playa del Carmen, available by taxi, rental
car, or bus, and offers 5 star dining and shopping. Your Cozumel
Condos guest book will provide information on tours and excursions,
which are arranged by your guest representative of Cozumel Condos. |
